How often should you do these common bedroom chores?

You know you should be washing your sheets and rotating your mattress. But maybe you're not sure how often to do tasks like these. In this blog, we'll discuss some of the common bedroom chores and when you should be taking them on.

Washing sheets, blankets, and pillowcases

It's typically recommended that you wash these items every two weeks. However, there are cases where you'll want to wash them once a week, i.e. if you have allergies or you tend to sweat at night. You may also want to wash your pillow periodically (about once every six months). But if you do so, make sure you follow the appropriate steps. CNET offers some advice here. To help keep your pillows protected from dirt and debris, use a washable pillow protector. You can wash this every time you wash your sheets.

Vacuuming the bedroom

Typically, it's recommended that you vacuum at least once a week. However, there are variables to take into consideration. If you have pets, for example, you may want to vacuum every day. Also, if you have carpet in the bedroom, then the recommendation goes up to two times a week.

Rotating your mattress

When you purchase a new mattress you may want to ask the sales representative for their recommendation based on the brand you're buying. You may also want to check the manual that it comes with it. In general, though, it's recommended that most mattresses be rotated one or two times yearly. Keep in mind that innerspring mattresses may require a rotation two to five times yearly. Newer ones are good with one to two times a year.

Replacing your pillow

Many pillows need to be replaced after a year or two. However, if you buy a quality pillow and take care of it (washing appropriately and using a protective case) they can last longer. If you find your pillow isn't offering the support you need, then it's time to buy a new one.

Replacing your mattress

How often you need to replace your mattress will depend on the brand and how well it's taken care of. If you have a good protector on it and it's a high-quality mattress it should last 8-10 years. If there is no protector and it's not being rotated often you may have to replace it much sooner.
