We put our heads together to come up with the most common questions we hear when working with our customers.  If you have any questions that are not listed here, please Contact Us with your question and we'll respond as soon as we can!

1. How long should my mattress last?

For many years, the mattress industry stated that the average life of a good mattress set was in the 8-10 year range.  Now the industry and the Better Sleep Council recommend replacing your mattress every 5-7 years.
It is difficult to say what the more accurate guideline is because the life of a mattress is influenced by several factors:  the quality of the materials used in the product, the weight of the person(s) sleeping on the mattress, whether the person is a side/back/stomach sleeper and how much the person moves while sleeping. Also, unrelated to durability, comfort preferences can change over time so you may sleep better on a harder or softer padded mattress after a few years.
On average, regardless of the mattress brand, a mattress should last 8-10 years at which point it starts to lose its ability to offer proper support.  This does not mean that the product has a warranty issue, it just means your mattress is wearing out.

2. I have a platform bed; do I need a new box spring (foundation)?

Depending on the furniture design, most platform beds have a slat system designed to take the place of a foundation and provide proper support for a mattress to be used by itself.

Note: All mattress manufacturers require a center support system for queen size products with at least one foot that goes to the floor to ensure proper support.

3. Some retailers insist I buy a mattress protector. Do I really need to buy one?

All mattress manufacturers void their warranties if the defective mattress has a stain on it, making it a good idea to protect your investment by purchasing a mattress protector.

Unlike a traditional heavily quilted mattress pad, a mattress protector does not change the feel of your new mattress because it is a thin barrier that fits very loosely, allowing your new mattress to perform and feel just like it did on the showroom floor.

4. My old pillow top mattress has deep holes where I sleep, how do I stop that from happening to my new mattress?

All new mattress products require a “break-in” period. To ensure that a mattress is broken in evenly, you should rotate it (spin it head to toe) every two weeks for the first two months and once a month as needed.

Please be aware that the floor sample from our stores is already broke in, while your mattress will be slightly firmer for the first few weeks after it's taken out of the bag

5. Do I need to flip my new mattress?

No, you do not need to flip your new mattress.  Most mattress manufacturers today only make one-sided mattress products that do not require flipping. However, you will still need to rotate or spin your new mattress to ensure it is broken in properly.

6. What are the dimensions of standard mattress sizes?

There is a tolerance of ± 1” on standard sizes based on the amount of padding and type of construction. When choosing a mattress, make comfort a priority – bigger is usually better.
If there is more than one person sleeping in the bed, you should consider purchasing a queen or king size mattress because they are wider and longer than the standard full size.
Below are the dimensions for standard mattress sizes:
  • Twin: 39” x 74”
  • Full: 54” x 74”
  • Queen: 60” x 80”
  • King: 76” x 80”
  • California King: 72” x 84”

7. Do you make custom-size mattresses?

We are always happy to create custom or special-size mattresses/sets to fit antique beds, campers, boats and a variety of other uses. As these items are special ordered from the factory, please allow 10-14 business days for the manufacturing process.

8. What should I look for in a new mattress and foundation to ensure I receive proper support?

Correct support is an essential ingredient for a healthy body. A good mattress and foundation will gently support your body at all points and keep your spine in proper alignment, or in a “neutral” sleeping position.

When “test resting” a mattress, pay special attention to your shoulders, hips and lower back for pressure points, and/or pain. If possible, try to err on the firmer side. You can always soften a mattress with a topper, but it is impossible to make a soft mattress firmer.

9. What if I can’t get a foundation (box spring) or mattress into my home because of narrow hallways, stairs etc.?

A king-size set comes standard with split foundations. Sometimes people need split foundations for a queen-size in order to move it into older homes or up narrow stairways. Split (or two-piece) foundations offer the same support as a one-piece box spring. While a bed frame with head to toe center support (not side to side) is recommended on all queen size mattresses, it is required when using split box springs.
Innerspring, latex or memory foam mattresses are not as rigid as foundations, and therefore have some flexibility to them.
Make sure you are careful with innerspring mattresses; you do not want to bend the border rod that surrounds the innerspring. If the border rod is bent, the mattress will not lie flat.

10. Do you offer delivery, and if so, how quickly can I get my mattress delivered?

Yes, we do offer same or next day professional delivery Monday through Saturday.

Unlike most of our competitors, we have a huge inventory that can often be delivered the same day, or in most cases, the very next day. We charge a small fee which is a stop fee regardless of the number of pieces you are having delivered.

Check with your nearest Mattress Dealzz location for pricing information.

13. What is important in a mattress warranty?

Warranties may be the most misunderstood part of mattress shopping.

Although most national brand manufacturers offer warranties ranging from 3 years on their promotional products to 10 years on their premium products, some mattresses come with warranties ranging from 20 years to a lifetime. This, however, does not mean that the mattress will actually last that long because warranties only cover defects in materials and workmanship, not the gradual loss of comfort or support.

In addition, be aware that some warranties are “pro-rated”, which means that as your mattress ages, you receive proportionately less credit towards a new mattress if you have a warranty problem. At Mattress Dealzz, all our products have “non-prorated” warranties which cover 100% of the cost to replace a defective mattress or foundation during the duration of the warranty. Make sure you clarify which type of warranty you are getting with the salesperson. You may even want to review the warranty card that comes with the product you are considering to ensure it is a non-prorated warranty.
You should also be aware of what is covered under a warranty. Body impressions deeper than an inch and one half, blown out tape edges, noisy foundations or mattress, structural damage such as loose, broken or protruding coils and wire are all considered a defect and are therefore covered under the manufacturer warranty. Over time, mattresses will wear out or your comfort preference may change. These conditions are not warranty defects.

14. Is it normal to see body impressions in my mattress?

In the normal course of a mattress' useful lifespan, you may notice the occurrence of slight impressions in the cushioning materials. This is a natural nesting or "conforming" that occurs as the cushioning materials adjust to the shape of the sleeper(s), known as a “body impression”.

Unless a body impression is greater than 1 ½”, it is not a structural defect covered by a warranty. It is simply an indication that the upholstery layers are settling and contouring to your body as you use your mattress set.

Regularly rotating your mattress will help to minimize the depth of the impression that occurs.

15. Why would I need a mattress warranty?  What can go wrong with a mattress or foundation?

Most mattresses sold never have a warranty issue. In fact, less than 2% of all mattresses or foundations sold in the U.S. are ever returned due to a warranty defect. Under most manufacturer's warranties, mattress/foundation defects that are covered include:

    • Loose or broken wires and coils.
    • Body impressions deeper than 1 1/2 inch.
    • Wires that are protruding from the fabric.
    • Excessive edge breakdown.
    • Squeaks.
    • Mattress sagging, but only when the correct bedframe and foundation support is used.
    • Splitting or broken defective wood beams (foundations).

16. What is the recommended cleaning method for a mattress?

Vacuuming is the only recommended cleaning method for a mattress. If you are determined to tackle a stain, use a mild soap with cold water and apply lightly.

Do not ever soak a mattress or foundation. If water is used, let the mattress air out and dry thoroughly.

Do not dry clean your mattress. The chemicals in dry cleaning agents and spot removers may be harmful to the fabric or underlying materials in your mattress.

Because mattresses that are stained or in an unsanitary condition void the manufacturer’s warranty, it is recommended that you use a protective covering such as a good quality, washable waterproof mattress protector to keep your mattress fresh and free from stains and soiling.
